How to Look After Your Valentine’s Flowers
With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, one of the most common questions we are asked is:
“How do I look after my flowers so they last as long as possible?”
Whether you are receiving flowers this Valentine’s Day or gifting them to someone special, proper care makes all the difference. At Bouquet Bar Adelaide, we want every bouquet to be enjoyed well beyond the day itself.
Here are our simple, florist-approved tips to help Valentine’s flowers stay fresh and beautiful.
Remove wrapping and start with a clean vase
Before placing flowers in water, always remove wrapping and start with a clean vase. Bacteria from previous use can shorten the life of your bouquet. Wash the vase thoroughly with warm soapy water and rinse well.
Trim the stems
Trim 2–3cm off the bottom of each stem using sharp scissors or secateurs. Always cut the stems on an angle to allow better water absorption. Re-cutting stems every few days will help extend the life of your flowers.
Use fresh water and change it regularly
Fresh water is essential. Change the water every one to two days, and top it up daily if needed. If flower food is provided, be sure to use it as directed.
Remove leaves below the waterline
Any leaves sitting in the water will break down quickly and encourage bacteria growth. Remove all foliage below the waterline to keep the water clean and your flowers fresher for longer.
Choose the right location
Place your Valentine’s flowers in a cool spot away from:
Direct sunlight
Heat sources
Air conditioning or draughts
Fruit bowls, as ripening fruit releases gases that shorten flower life
A cool, calm area inside your home is ideal.
Enjoy the natural beauty
Fresh flowers naturally change as they open and mature. Some blooms may open faster than others — this is completely normal. Removing any spent flowers will allow the remaining blooms to continue looking their best.
